Local News #1: Barcelona Launches Bid to Host Europe’s Most Powerful Supercomputer

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has officially announced that by 2021, it wants to be the home of one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers. This computer would partially be funded by the European Commission, which would prevent Spain from being the main financial back behind this computer. The European Union will also allocate $250 million to fund two of the chosen projects. The idea of this project is in order to keep up with China, the United States and Japan. These countries are also building some of the world’s supercomputers. These new supercomputers are expected to have a minimum capacity of 200 petaFLOPS. These two proposed projects will be the most powerful ones in all of Europe and among the top 10 in the world. Since the Barcelona Supercomputing Center is Spain’s to supercomputing center, it makes sense to have this project here. I think that it is a great idea to have this project take place in Barcelona. Barcelona is a very progressive city, so it would be ideal to have this project of a supercomputer happen in Barcelona. Furthermore, the center that Barcelona has specializes in high-performance computing, so a supercomputer would be efficiently built and maintained here. I also think that this supercomputer could help not only Barcelona, but all of Spain and Europe further its technological advancements.
